Slow Progress . . .

Perhaps two weeks was a little optimistic !

Looks like it is going to be worth it though : )

A Week In Books (2)

Another couple of books dealt with!

I have had ' Starter For Ten ' on my Amazon wish list for ages, since reading ' One Day ' by the same author and really enjoying it (despite the ending ! ) I spotted this in a charity shop in town, bargain. I  really enjoyed this too, although it is one of those cringy stories that makes you want to get hold of the characters and give them a good shake! I think I will be seeking out more David Nicholls, it is light hearted and enjoyable without being grossly chic-lit.

I love PG Wodehouse! I have to confess I watched and loved the Jeeves and Wooster television series with Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry before reading any of the books, but have since read three or four, although none of the Jeeves and Wooster ones, and I really enjoyed his writing. Again, it is light hearted and funny without seeming really trashy. I am also quite enchanted by the insight into 1910s aristocracy, oh, how the other half lived! Some of the language is fabulous, and the character types that Wodehouse seems to call on repeatedly are brilliant. I particularly love the foppish bachelor, much like Wooster, that seem to appear in many of the books. I am really pleased he had such a prolific writing career, still about another 90 or so books for me to read : )

Hometown Tourist (part two)

Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside . . .

Continuing the hometown tourist series, I had a good tourist-style wander around the little seaside town that has been my home for a large portion of my life. I have to admit, I do realise why all the tourists show up here every summer ! There are definitely nice bits of the town, which I think having spent so long living here, are easy to miss. When you are just visiting a place I think it is easier to spot the good bits and gloss over the not so lovely bits, and it is nice to take an outsider viewpoint for once. Here are the photographic results, suitably cheesy and rose-tinted I hope !

A Thoroughly British Post About The Weather.

I am absolutely fed up of people talking about the damn weather, yet here I am, inevitably, talking about the damn weather ! I don't think I could live somewhere that was perpetually sunny, I do like a good storm, but having spent the winter in lovely wet Wales, a little of the sunny stuff wouldn't go amiss! Plus, I find myself back in the same dreary summer job that I seem to go back to year after year (this is the last time! ), trying to flog buckets and spades to tourists, and the rain doesn't do good things for sales, so heres hoping for some sunshine soon . . .

Believe it or not, this is Cornwall!

Hometown Tourist (part one)

I am trying to make a bit of an effort to explore my hometown (well, home area) while I am back for the summer again. I usually just come back to the area and instantly sink into laziness, so this year I have decided to do some proper exploring with my camera in tow. This is the village where my boyfriend lives, the old part is lovely, full of lots of cute cottages, and the surrounding countryside is pretty beautiful too. I took a wander around the other evening whilst the sun was setting, here are the results (I want a new camera!)

A Week In Books

It is safe to say that work is pretty dead at the moment, but luckily I have a boss who doesn't mind me reading (and knitting) whilst I am 'working'. This is my book selection for the week..
I know I really need to challenge myself more with reading but I cannot help reaching for the terrible chic-lit! I AM trying to limit myself, and I do read quite a lot of non-fiction though, as you can see from this week: Two out of three are non-fiction choices.

I have already ploughed through 'Why does E=mc2?', really good, but seriously made my brain hurt; 'the Earth is falling in a straight line around the sun...'( ! ) and I have definitely forgotten the majority of what I learnt in A level Maths. Physics does fascinate me though, and I will be seeking out more books of this type in the future.

I have to confess a real love for Bill Bryson books, I have read most of his about travel, as well as a few others too, and I really enjoy his style. He is insightful and there are proper laugh-out-loud moments. I am about half way through 'Made In America' and it is another brilliant book, in which he discusses the evolution of American english away from British english (?), I am learning lots, and of course, as with all his writing, the book is full of fascinating and entertaining anecdotes. My only complaint about his books is that I tend to race through them as I can never put them down!

15 Minute Feast

Not wanting to be arrogant or anything, but sometimes I impress even myself with my brilliance! Here is tonight's speedy dinner; just proper wholegrain bread, really lovely local pork sausages split in half, strong cheddar cheese, wilted spinach and fried eggs. TASTY! No recipe required.

Okay, that was a little arrogant :)

Ice-Cream Stripes

I have been knitting for a couple of years now, but I have only attempted small projects so far; mainly hats, socks and mittens, so I think the time has come for me to attempt something a little more challenging, and wearable!

I was having a little browse in the local craft shop and spotted the pattern for this lovely striped jumper, and then when I was looking for a similar (free) pattern on the internet I found this exact pattern!

I decided against the seriously expensive Rowan yarn that the pattern recommended and went for this pretty Sirdar yarn instead, which is about half the price! I am loving the ice-cream colours, I hope they all look good knitted together. I'll put up some pics of the finished article when it is done, I reckon probably in a couple of weeks, unless it is a total disaster, in which case this post may quietly disappear...

Hello World...

Well the time has come for me to EXIST and get some sort of online presence, so here goes nothing!

I hope to use this space to record my eternal quest for self-improvement, more for my own benefit than anything else, but I hope that you out there may be vaguely interested in the goings-on in my little life. I hope to post about projects, events and silly little things that possibly may only entertain me, and hopefully blogging regularly will encourage me to:

DO SOMETHING...
